NEWS FROM AUGUST 2025

August as to be expected was hot and busy ! So many of us are looking forward to a cooler September ! We hope to see some of our “swallows” back with us.

Ordinands. During the month of August, Santa Margarita welcomed two ordinands from London who have a long association with Menorca.

"Kath and Jamie have two young children (Amelie (5), and Noah (3). They live in King's Cross in London, and are based at a large Church of England church there called KXC where among other things they oversee Mission and Evangelism which includes prison ministry, refugee and asylum-seeker ministry and Alpha. They were previously church leaders in another denomination for a number of years, but last September began their training for ordination within the Church of England. As part of that training they are required to complete an 'alternative placement' for a few weeks in a different part of the Anglican Church to KXC. Jamie grew up spending extended time in Menorca since he was a baby and has cumulatively now spent years of his life there. Kath and their two young children have also become adopted Menorca-enthusiasts over the years! Together, they are excited about getting to join in and serving the church out in Menorca this August."

They were pleased to assist at the Sunday services, preaching (including recording their talks), the prayers and acting as server (although the latter was very much a new experience for them - wearing the long white alb and the duties associated with the role!). They also participated at the baptism on the Isla del Rey, a funeral, and the mid week services. They are very grateful to Paul and Santa Margarita for giving them the opportunity for their “alternative placement”.

August Tapas Lunch – at Carole & Tony Brayford’s home was a very enjoyable afternoon. A very hot day, as was most of August, but good to enjoy some food and wine together whilst sharing pleasant conversation. As always good to have some visitors with us.

Sadly the visiting ordinands were not able to be present for more than a short time spending most of the day (and a night) at the hospital with little Noah who had a nasty allergic reaction to something! For those who enquired, he seemed none the worse for his experience and is totally recovered.

The Halsey Family – Fiona, Ben, Fenella, Georgie, Jemima and Fergus were visiting us and celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary with a blessing from Paul. Two of the girls read at the service. A very happy occasion

Baptism on the Isla del Rey. Pandora and David had a wedding blessing on the Isla del Rey in July 2022 followed by the baptism of their first son, Oriade. In August they returned to the chapel of St. George for the baptism of their second son, Amatayo. A lovely service (see photo).

PERU The Rev. Deborah Chapman, the Archdeaconry link for Peru, was in Peru at the end of August with Jean Samaniego and the committee that deals with student grants at the Cathedral of the Good Shepherd. She plans to send a report on each of the students. We will have more information when she returns. Deborah met one of the students whom we helped to support last year to finish secondary school. She says that “he is a brilliant musician - probably the best in the Anglican Diocese of Peru!"

SEPTEMBER AND FUTURE EVENTS 2025

Tapas Lunch – Thursday 4 September at 4pm. Johnny and Jan Wright have very kindly invited us to their home in Binisfua Roters for drinks and tapas. Afternoon worship at Cala’n Bosc .  The next service will be on Sunday 28 September at 17.00.

GENERAL

Mission Giving for 2025. The Church Council has agreed that the main beneficiaries of our giving this year will be support for Peruvian students and also food vouchers to the needy on the island (via the Red Cross).

Coffee after Sunday services.  We are trying to broaden the group of those who serve refreshments after the service. Volunteers will be welcomed. Talk to Paul. The small donations of 1.50€ per cup of coffee each week are used to support a number of different aspects of chaplaincy life from aiding the needy with food, to the floral decorations in the church.

If anyone is willing to host a future social event – coffee morning, afternoon tea, or simple tapas that would be much appreciated.  Please let Carole know.
