NEWS FROM June 2024

Retirement of Ambassador to Spain. On Wednesday, 19 June, representatives of groups that support the British community in Spain, including the current honorary consuls and members of the Anglican clergy, including our Chaplain, Paul, gathered at a reception in Madrid to say farewell to Hugh Elliott, the Ambassador to Spain, who is about to move to duty with the Foreign Office in London.

Lunch 21 June. An excellent and well attended lunch at Caprichosa overlooking the sea at Cala Fonts with good food and company. Pleased to have Malcolm and Margaret’s grandson, visiting from the UK, joining us.

Baptism – on Tuesday 25 June, a special baptism service for  Luke (dad), Tate (15months) and Tate’s sister, Layla (17) all baptised together !  A really happy occasion.

Ordination in Brussels Cathedral.  Also in June, the Ordination service for Daleen (a young lady who has visited us at Santa Margarita several times and was mentored by Paul when she began the ordination process).  Unfortunately Paul was unable to find “cover” for Sunday’s service and could not attend.

Anglo-American Cemetery.  In June Paul presided over the annual memorial service to honour those interred there principally in the late 18th century.  He has an article and photographs in this month’s Roqueta about the cemetery.  The details will be available in the August Newsletter

JULY AND FUTURE EVENTS 2024

Lunch Saturday 13 July.  For our July lunch we are back to the Cricket Club in Mahon under the trees again where we enjoyed a splendid time last year.  Meet at 1.30pm for drinks and nibbles.  The menu at 22.50€ each (45€ p. couple) is Seafood or Vegetarian Paella (to be ordered in advance) + a dessert (Tiramasui or Baked Cheese Cake). Drinks can be purchased separately from the bar.  Please let Carole or Paul know if you would like to join us or sign the sheet on the church notice board.  Summer Cricket starts at about 10.30am and anyone who would like to play is welcome !!

Sunday 21 July 7pm. Patronal Festival of Santa Margarita.  As in previous years we plan to celebrate the fiesta with a procession starting from the Catholic church in Es Castell (Nuestra Señora del Rosario) to Santa Margarita including a band and an ecumenical prayer service.  This will be followed by refreshments.  If you are able to contribute a plate of nibbles do talk with Liz Astley or Kathy Rosseti.   More details nearer the time on the church website.

August lunch – this is likely to be at the Trattoria Vianello in Mahon.  Paul and Kate will be away and Michael Higgins will be with us in Paul’s absence.  More details to follow.

September – Johnny & Jan Wright have offered to host a tapas event at their home. We have very much enjoyed their hospitality on previous occasions so look forward to it. More details soon.
